Perhaps if we take a close look at these successful language learners we may discover a few of the techniques which make language learning easier for them. First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher;they discover their own way to learn the language.Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes. Successful language learning is active learning. Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again. When communication is difficult, they can accept information that is inexact or incomplete. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose. They want to learn the language because they are interested in the people who speak it.It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly because they want to learn with it. What kind of language learner are you? If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively and purposefully. On the other hand,if your language learning has been less than successful, you might do well to try some of the techniques outlined above. 36.What makes language learning easier for some people than for others according to this text? A.Some people learn grammar more quickly than others. B.Successful language learners use special techniques. C.Some people have good teachers and good books. D.Successful language learners are more intelligent than others. 37.How do successful language learners learn languages? A.They learn independently, actively and purposefully. B.They learn special techniques from their teachers. C.They learn the rules and patterns of the language from books. D.They learn to think about the meaning of every new word. 38.Why do successful language learners find it easy to practice using the language regularly? A.They find it easy to communicate. B.They look for inexact information. C.They want to teach the language to others. D.They want to learn from people who speak the language. 39.Why did the author write this text? A.To teach people to speak English. B.To explain why language learning is difficult. C.To compare language learning with other types of learning. D.To encourage language learners to use these techniques. B Some years ago, while in Denmark,I visited a laughter club in a small town. While having dinner, laughter leader,Heine Hansen, told me he first learnt about laughter clubs from a newspaper, and immediately joined one as soon as it opened in his area. He encouraged his mother to accompany him to the laughter club,as his wife refused and ignored (不理睬) the idea.Later, out of curiosity, she attended one laughter club and was surprised to find how so many people could laugh so much at absolutely nothing. In fact, she even admitted that laughing was the hardest ever in her life. Heine said he was a very serious person working on the computer the whole day in a big factory. But after joining the laughter club and attending the first few classes,he found a great change.Whenever he walked through his office, his colleagues would smile at him, which was rather unusual. It really surprised him.He asked his colleagues the reason why they smiled at him,and his colleagues said that they were just returning his smile as they found him smiling like never before.Heine realized that it was a change in his behavior (行为) and attitude that had brought about a change in the behavior of others. He was just getting back what he was giving.A smile for a smile! This is true in all relationships. We may do something to others and when they do the same to us,we sometimes get offended (触怒).Remember, others will always treat you the way you treat them.So if you don't like what you get from others,it could be that you are treating them in a similar manner.Your own actions are responsible for people's reactions; they decide what comes your way. 40.What is the best title of the passage? A.Life is like a mirror B.Act as others do in life C.Learn from others D.Laughter clubs are helpful 41.We can infer from the story of Heine that ________. A.he got what he had given in work B.he was easy to get along with C.he benefited a lot from joining the club D.to laugh is a way of being polite 42.Before attending the laughter club,Heine and his wife probably ________. A.refused each other often B.ignored the family members C.were both serious people D.were very popular with others 43.What does the underlined word“they”in the last paragraph refer to? A.Other people. B.Others' actions. C.Relationships. D.Our own actions. C Right now you are reading English. That means you are using your brain in a very active way.Reading is a very active process. It is true that the writer does a lot of work, but the reader also has to work hard. Here are some useful tips for you. Try to read at the right level.Read something that you can (more or less)understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary,it is not interesting for you and you will soon be discouraged. Make a note of new vocabulary. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your vocabulary book. But you don't have to write them while you are reading.Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read;mark them with a pen; then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and add them to your vocabulary book. Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day.Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday.Fix a time to read and keep to it.For example, you could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed,or when you get up,or at lunchtime. Read what interests you.Choose a magazine or book about a subject that you like.If you choose something that you like to read,it can actually be interesting and enjoyable. For example,if you like to read about football in your own language, why not read about football in English? You will get information about football and improve your English at the same time. 44.The main purpose of the passage is to ________. A.praise B.guide C.entertain D.persuade 45.If we meet a few new words on a page while reading,we should ________. A.write them down at once B.guess the meaning at first C.give up reading them D.turn to teachers or classmates 46.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.We must spend two hours in reading every day. B.We should only read some easy books which don't have new words. C.When we meet a new word, mark it with a pen and look it up in a dictionary at once. D.If we read some books which we are interested in,we will find reading enjoyable. 47.What would be the best title of the passage? A.Why is reading so important? I was also five years younger thanone of my brothers and seven years younger than the other. As a result I oftenfelt left out when their friends came over to play. I was either too small ortoo young for whatever they were doing and they didn't want their youngerbrother listening to their conversations either. More often than not I foundmyself outside playing alone and feeling forgotten. I remember one spring afternoon feeling especially lonely as I sat in theyard behind our house. We lived miles from town and I hardly saw my own friendsoutside of school. I heard my brothers laughing from inside the house and felt asingle tear coming down my cheek. At that moment I saw a large brown dog walkingover to me. He looked happy and his tail was wagging as well. Even though hedidn't know me he greeted me like a long lost friend, licking(舔) my chin andsitting beside me on the spring grass. It must have been at least an hour that Ipatted and talked to this four-legged angel. He let me pour out all my troublesand share my deepest thoughts before he kissed my cheek goodbye and ambled offeither to Heaven or his home. I went back inside feeling happy, knowing that nomatter what life may hold I was loved. Now over 40 years later I still rememberthat angel with a smile. I believe that God sent him at that moment of sadness to remind me just howmuch he loved me. There is nothing more important than knowing we are loved. When we are loved, we will learn to love others. Learning to love helps us tounderstand ourselves and other people better. 1.How did the writer feel when his brothers’ friends came? A. Proud. B. Worried. C. Lonely. D. A. the boy met a long lost friend B. the boy had no friends at school C. the dog spent the afternoon with the boy and his brothers D. the dog helped the boy realize that he was loved 4.The author wrote the story to______. A. encourage people to talk about their troubles B. show knowing you are loved is the most important C. tell people they should treat animals friendly D. share his unforgettable experience with us B I am a good mother to three children. I have tried never to let myprofession stand in the way of being a good parent. I no longer consider myself the center of the universe. I show up. Ilisten. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my husband. I have tried to makemarriage vows (誓约) mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends, andthey to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today. So here's what I wanted to tell you today: get a life. A real life, not adesire of the next promotion (提升), the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who loveyou. And remember that love is not leisure(休闲) but work. Pick up the phone. Sendan e?mail. Write a letter. And realize that life is the best thing and that youhave no business taking it for granted. It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It isso easy to exist instead of living. I learned to live many years ago. Somethingreally, really bad happened to me,something that changed my life. If I had mychoice,it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it iswhat, today, seems to be the hardest lesson of all. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned to look at allthe good in the world and tried to give some of it back because I believed init, completely and totally. And I tried to do that,in part,by telling others whatI had learned. By telling them this:read in the backyard with the sun on your face. Learnto be happy. And think of life as a deadly illness, because if you do,you willlive with joy and passion(激情) as it ought to be lived. 5. How did the author form her view of life? A.Through social experience. A.Do it well to serve others. B.Earn enough money to make life better. C.Try your best to get higher position and pay. D.Don’t let it affect your real life. 8. It can be inferred from the passage that________. A.the author is a success in personal life B.the author doesn’t try her best to work well C.the author spends all her time caring for her children D.the author likes traveling very much C Mom’s birthday present? It may be a difficult thing for some people, butfor me, it is an easy thing. Mom loved flowers, so every year I sent herflowers. Actually she had a bed of irises (鸢尾花) in the backyard of her small,Indiana farm. They were beautiful. “Take some,” she said, “Dig some up and plantthem on the side of your own house.” But in my yard they became lacking in energy. A year passed, then two, butnot one flower appeared. I cut back all their green leaves. I was tired ofseeing them so lonely. Finally, I dug the irises up and threw them away. About that time Mom died unexpectedly. My sister and I sold the farm. Inever went back to see the irises. I just couldn’t stand seeing another familyliving in our home—Mom’s home. Autumn came, then winter. The following spring,as Mom’s birthday approached, I struggled with the question of how to rememberher. I stared out of the window and saw a few stubborn irises in my side yardsprouting (发芽), —tall, thin but flowerless. Because of seeing them, I decided toorder flowers as I always did on Mom’s birthday, and send them to my sister. Iwished so badly I could still send flowers to Mom. But that was impossible. On the morning of Mom’s birthday, I was in my car ready to work. Somethingin the yard caught my eye. The irises! One had bloomed with flowers, big, showyand purple, as lovely as they ever had been on Mom’s farm. I smiled and turnedmy eyes upward. I could no longer send flowers to Mom. But somehow, she’d beenable to send them to me. 9.According to the first paragraph, Mom ________. A. all died quickly B. grew as well as on Mom’s farm C. didn’t bloom at all D. grew better than those on Mom’s farm 11.What troubled the author? A. She didn’t know how to grow irises. B. She regretted they had sold Mom’s farm. C. She couldn’t bear others living in Mom’s home. D. She didn’t know what to do in memory of Mom. 12.What can be learned from the last paragraph? A. All the irises in the author’s yard bloomed. B. The author went to see the irises in Mom’s yard. C. It was Mom who took care of these irises in the author’s yard. D. The author thought the blooming irises were gifts from Mom. D The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper. Dear editor, I’d like to express my opinion about grades. Students should be allowed tostudy without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becomingaware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. Iunderstand that grades are useful, but grades often limit creativity. Competingfor better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursuemusic, dramatics and sports. Grades force an arbitrary(武断的) standard of successon everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be removedimmediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed ongrades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village HighSchool. Magdalena Smith Drama Club Dear editor, I’d like to say something about grades. Let’s face the facts about grades.Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate(激发) students towork at their highest level of competence(能力). Second, they act as a reward forhardworking students and as a punishment to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure students’achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university.I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say thatthey were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me landa part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think gradesare extremely important at Village High School. Simon Harper Science Club 13.Which of the following is not Magdalena Smith’s opinion? A. Grades should not be used to measure a person’s success. B. Students may give up the chance to learn music and sports forgrades. C. Students’ creativity may not be developed for grades. D. Grades should be taken away at once.14.We can learn Simon Harper_____. A. is concerned about students' creativity B. believes in the benefits of good grades C. doesn't work too hard at his studies D. supports students' interests and abilities 15.From the second letter, we can infer that Simon Harper is a/an_____. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. A Tanzania Tarangire is a national Park which lies in Tanzania. The park itself covers an area of around 2,850 square kilometers, making it the sixth largest park of its kind in the country. I recently visited Tarangire to see what it was like…. One of the first sightings upon entering the park which I found was a huge herd(群)of elephants. Our guide told us that Tagrangire was probably the best place in Tanzania to find large herds of elephants, and that their population in the park was around 2,500. We continued to watch the elephants as they stood under trees and scratched themselves against the trees to hit the spot of an itch(痒处). To the right of the elephant herd, we noticed a big tree! Our guide informed us that this was a Baobab tree and that they could live for hundreds of years. Compared with this tree, the elephant just looked like dwarfs(侏儒)! We were informed that Tarangire was one of the best National Parks in Africa to see so many Baobab trees. As we continued our drive through the park, we finally reached a watering hole. Our guide warned us that there were lions all around us. It took us all a while to find them, but there they were! Most of them are resting in the shade under brushes, but there was one that was drinking from the watering hole directly in front of us. We then noticed just to our right, there were a couple of fresh zebra corpses(尸体)— it seemed as if the lions which were resting had killed them! We were unlucky not to have seen the actual kill, as our guide had mentioned that the zebra corpses were fresh and the kill had occurred within the last hour. Our final big sighting was one that none of us were expecting to see, even our guide! We pulled over to where there was a large gathering of cars, with a sleeping leopard(美洲豹)there! We took photos happily and excitedly and observed its surprising body before returning to our hotel as it was getting late. So, I hope you enjoyed my description of Tarangire, and that I have inspired you to add this amazing park to your very own Tanzania travel route. 56. A dairy entry B. A travel guide C. An advertisement D. A travel agency B Some students get so nervous before an exam that they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a psychology professor at the University of Chicago, has studied these highly anxious exam-takers. “They start worrying about the results. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam,” says Sian Beilock. The researchers tested the idea on a group of 20 anxious college students. They gave them two short math exams. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the coming second exam. The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second exam would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 20% worse on the second exam. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the exam. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who wrote about their feelings got an average grade of B+, compared with a B-for those who did not. But what can they do if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and they can still improve their performance. 61. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer. CPR is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (心肺复苏). It forces air into the lungs and pumps(用泵抽) blood and oxygen to the brain in order to increase the chances that a person whose heart stops will survive. It increases the chances that he or she will suffer little or no brain damage. The American Heart Association suggests two ways to perform CPR. One combines the use of hands to pump the victim’s chest(胸腔)with rescue breathing. The other method is called “Hands-Only CPR”, which is for people who are unwilling or unable to perform rescue breathing. Some people fear infection(感染). Others say they are afraid of making the patient worse. But the American Heart Association strongly asks people in contact with a victim(受害者) to take action and tells how to take it. It says you can recognize a person needing CPR. He or she is unconscious(无意识) -- unable to communicate or react to surroundings or speech. His or her skin has lost color. The person is not breathing. If such conditions describe the situation, chances are the heart has stopped beating. You should act by calling for help, or sending someone else. Even if you cannot do mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing, you can perform Hands-Only CPR. You can do chest compressions(压迫) that help to keep blood flowing to the brain and the heart. To perform the compressions, place one hand over the other and press firmly on the center of the victim’s chest. Push down about five centimeters. Aim for one hundred compressions each minute. Doctor Sayre suggests that medical workers do both the breathing method and chest compressions as usual. He says some victims, including babies, need the mouth-to-mouth breathing with the compressions. Still, the doctor says it is better to do just chest compressions than to do nothing. Section B(10 marks) Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit. March 22nd every year has been the World Water Day since 1993. Everyone knows that over 70% of our planet is covered with water, but do you know that only 3% of the water is fresh and less than 1% of this fresh water is available for human use? Water shortage The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages, while 40% of the more than 2 billion people, have no access to clean water. Fresh water is such a life-or-death issue(问题) in many parts of the world that every eight seconds a child dies from drinking dirty water. How to save water Turn off the tap while you brush you teeth in the morning and before bedtime, and you can save up to 8 gallons of water! That adds up to more than 200 gallons a month, enough to fill a huge fish tank that holds 6 small sharks! Keep your shower under 5 minutes long. In fact, a 5-minute shower uses more water than a person living in poverty in a developing country uses in an entire day. Fix the leak. If your toilet has a leak, you could be wasting about 200 gallons of water every day. That would be like flushing your toilet more than 50 times for no reason! We each share responsibility for the sustainable management(可持续管理) of our water resources, which means using less water at home, in the workplace, at school, on holidays, on the farm,… everyone, everywhere, every time. 81.
